Land Management Campaign conducted in the year 2005 was a huge success. The patchy lands, the eroded farmlands, the degraded lands has been revived now. This is purely due to the immense political will by the then the agriculture minister. If farmer in Moshi is making money by selling gautalama seedlings, if a farmer is Gongthung is happy that his maize field is now terracce, if his house is still standing in wongchilu and if immense benefits has been reaped by farmers in other five more LMC sites, the credits goes to the Technical person, who were nominated directly from the field. This group of extension staff shouldered the greatest responsibility in ensuring the success of the campaign. This is in the sense that the short training is supposed to equip them with the knowledge to identify the site, recommend, design and lead the execution of the bio-engineering measures. We were promised the fruits of the seed we sow in the similar form of the adage, "What you sow, Shall you reap". The nature was at its worst obviously becuase it was mid-summer. The plattering rain did not drench and wash away the spirit of these people who can be flatly blamed for the failure if there is any. And leading the group wasn't a piece of bread especially when you are the boss of your boss. The group mainly constituted of top officials of the Ministry. Our efforts can now be seen in greenary of the sites. However, soon after the campaign is completed, these set of people are completely forgotten. The seeds we have sown has started bearing fruits, but sadly it goes into some strangers. Infact, if SLM is a success story and is being still continued in the country, these people who they termed as 'technical group" invested huge efforts. The incentives such as a training in abroad, a study tour or any other form of incentives were well deserved by these people. However, once the purpose has been served, they are sent to the geog, never to see again... |
